The Completely Random Questions-

What about the title of your novel?

In The Name Of Being Well, I Made Myself Sick

I titled the book this because I always wanted to be healthy and had good intentions, but things somehow or other went awry. In the book, I show how I am very easily fooled by my mind in the sense that I believe I am doing something good for myself, when really, I’m just using “healthy” as an excuse to keep myself suffering. As I describe in the book, I feel that if I am not the ideal healthy, people won’t love me and I’m a bad person.

Do you ever wish that you had an entirely uncreative job, like data entry or working in a factory?

Oh no! I’ve had uncreative jobs like those already. For me, actually, the problem is that I am so creative I don’t acknowledge the importance of the more boring (but necessary) processes that one needs to do in order to allow creativity to truly flourish.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

This is such a good question. Unfortunately, I do not know! I think I’d need a couple different actresses, especially since my personality changes so much as I started to get sicker. However, I have seen myself as a character in a movie, which I talk about in the next question.

Have you ever read or seen yourself as a character in a book or a movie?

I’ve watched many different movies on eating disorders and, sadly, never felt as though I could truly relate to the main girl—the sick girl—being featured. There are usually parts of a character that I can relate to but definitely not all of her.  As for non-eating disorders media, I really looked up to Hilary Duff in the television show Lizzie McGuire. I wouldn’t say I actually saw myself as Lizzie; it was more like I tried to emulate Lizzie.

About a month ago I watched some of the beginning episodes of Dawson’s Creek and really found myself being able to relate to the character of Joey, played by Katie Holmes. She’s a lot taller than I am in real life, but I saw myself undergoing similar feelings as the ones she had for her friend Dawson.

How do you feel about being interviewed?

I feel good. I feel excited. I would like to do as many different interviews as possible and answer as many unique questions as possible. Hopefully, it’s a good way to spread the message of my book.

Why should we read your book?

You should read my book because it is authentic…and because I worked really, really hard on it! My book is suitable for health and wellness professionals, doctors, therapists, parents, teachers, college-age women and more. I hope people will read my book and see what it’s really like to be diagnosed with an eating disorder instead of just believing the stereotypes. I want to make a difference in the world, and in order to do so I’m asking that people please read what I have to say.

Inbetween Your Choice

What does it mean to be fully present?

For starters:  Stop worrying about Thanksgiving and take care of your Body – Mind – Spirit in this present moment.

A few startling patterns will begin to come into focus for us this week.  Chances are you are aware that the Thanksgiving Holiday is this coming Thursday here in good ole  ‘Merica!  Before we get off topic on another rant (and you can probably guess where this rant will go …) we want to talk about a taboo topic around these parts: DIET.

We quite literally just finished reading the 100th blog-o-post about working out and eating right this coming Thanksgiving.  Seriously peeps … Dare we tread into troubled waters?

Oh how nice, eat less, exercise more!?!  Ground breaking stuff right there!

This type of advice is nauseating and inadequate at best.  Take a quick look around at the waistlines of the lovely peeps passing by?  Something should become painfully clear:  Different body types use calories in different ways.  Each one of us are programmed and predisposed to carry more fat, more weight than others. No kidding hot-shot – Diet and exercise help … (<—Key Word).  Although when all is said and done,  the solution we seek is inevitably more complicated and complex than pushing away the plate and torturing yourself in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

One day out of one year feasting with close family and friends will not hurt … We promise!!!

Holley Mangold-  The ONLY woman to watch at the Games, PERIOD!  Authentic, real and an inspiration to us here.

Alise Post-  Your butt is sore if you stub a toe during a two-mile run!  Image all the blog posts you would write if you had the following: A torn ACL, LCL and hamstring.  Just for good measure lets toss in a hairline fracture in her femur and a detached meniscus … last July during a training ride!  Keep an eye on The Beast!

Jordan Burroughs-  All we see is gold as well!!!  He may hail from Slakerville, NJ although he reared his dark side while in Good ‘Ole Nebraska.

Sir Chris Hoy-  Ladies, he’s a Sir.  That’s all you need to know.

Lolo Jones-  Every Father reading today wants his Son to marry a woman like Lolo.  She’s humble and not perfect, human.  Plus she would whoop the hell out of your kid in a moments notice … Running of course!

Ryan Lochte-  Michael Phelps is a douche.  Albeit a douche with some hardware.  Mr. Lochte is going to whoop his ass!

You are what you eat!

Once again we are very grateful to have Melissa over today from Sweet Wholesome Health with such an inspiring article.  Get the hummus ready and be sure to clean up the mess you left behind toasting your bagel…This is a really good read!

How much time do you spend looking into exactly what you are eating? How closely are you looking?

Ideally everyone that is aware of being healthy would cook completely from scratch and use only ingredients that they grew themselves. Then there would be no guessing as to what and how it was grown but this is impossible for most of us and totally unrealistic. Of course you can grow some things and cook a lot of your meals but not everyone has as much time as they need for what they would like to be eating.

Here are my top 2 tips for finding the best foods in a sea of options at the SUPERMARKET!

  1.  Stop looking at the nutrition facts first. Remember you are what you eat! Start with the ingredients list. If you can’t read or understand what most of the ingredients, it is NOT FOOD and your body doesn’t know how to digest it. There are some really great products out there but you have to look closely to find them. For example my favorite on the go bar is LaraBars. They are delicious, give you energy and only have 5 or 6 real ingredients which means it is all real food yum!
  2. Although the “healthy foods” section is usually way more expensive at supermarkets, there is usually some really good markdowns. The general public stay away from this isle because of the cost so there are always products that the supermarket has to push to sell which means major markdowns! Stock up on these delicious real ingredient foods for when you need something quick.
The key is to always make the best decision possible. You never want to put so much pressure on your food choices that you create extra stress in your body. The stress will do just as much if not more damage. So make an educated decision and enjoy what you have. If you know you won’t have time to make breakfast this week go to the supermarket and buy some LaraBars because at least you know it is real food going into your body even if it isn’t the ideal breakfast.

The Nutrition Equation…

Ever feel overwhelmed by the equation of nutrition (% of fat vs % protein vs % carbs etc)?  Calculating what’s right for you does not mean you have to break out the calculator.  Of course some of you ( accountant types) might enjoy that but for the rest of us that is just adding more painful work into our busy lives.

Here are some ways you can add both fun and more healthy food into your daily routine!

Get out of your comfort zone one baby step at a time.  While you are getting ready in the morning (washing your hair, getting dressed) set a goal for yourself to try something new today.  Don’t change your whole meal…Just add one new ingredient!  Let yourself get excited about it and be proud when you accomplish your goal!

Find out what is seasonal and available right now in your area.  It will be lower cost, very fresh and will support your local farmers.  There are lots of websites out there that can give you this info and a list of farmers markets you can find them at.

Get creative!  Whatever local food you chose, take a sec to find a recipe that is going to get your taste buds excited and will be fun to make.  For those of you experiencing spring it can be as simple as trying a new kind of lettuce or leafy green (kale, Swiss chard, arugala).  You do not have to be a master chef to make tasty meals just willing to try.  Leafy greens like kale are packed full of vitamins and minerals and only take a few minutes to cook!

Eating healthier and being healthy is a unique journey for each and every one of us. Take time to discover how YOU are going to get there!

We will be paying attention to what happens above…stay tuned peeps this is going to get interesting quick!

How do you begin to form a sense of self-respecting awareness?  Follow us here at CultFit HQ as we explore the path that is often overlooked.  We apologize to those of you reading at Starbucks this morning for allowing us to take a break the last two weeks, kicking the proverbial can down the road.  We do take Random Fitness seriously.  Just not after surgery and mega doses of painkillers and Arnica Oil rubdowns.

Insanity, P90x, ReeBok CrossFit, Yoga-Mom Yoga, Pilates, Group Fitness, Boot-camps, late night infomercials (Hell anything else you can think of?) fail you and us on so many levels.  We are not opening the floor up here for debate whether or not these programs work.  Some do and some don’t, understand?  We’re digging much deeper here than the yoga instruction PDF that came with your recent P90x purchase or broad times and modial domain rubbish that X-Fit was founded on!

Talking points for the next fortnight:  Pain is a gift, foundations, awareness of breath, small muscle groups, range of motion AROUND the joints not through them (we are currently penning a book touching on this subject and something a majority of you need to address soon.)

There will be more added to the list and as always expect some douche bag antics along the way to keep things light.  Did you read that?  Don’t take yourself too seriously Greek yogurt addicted Random Fitness albóndigas!?!

If you fail to see the angle from which we write you from after reading about the great Jack LaLanne in the above article?  3-2-1 continue picking your programs from the netz, paying out $$$ for gym memberships on a yearly basis and trying quick fix remedies for your fitness aliments.

Our journey this week is predicated on the belief  to avoid pain when you work out.  Pain is to be treated as a gift to give us feedback about what we are doing wrong.  Do not confuse pain with difficulty, exhaustion, pushing the limit etc.  Pain from here on out is a feedback tool to let you know you are an insufferable idiot!

If you are already mid-stream in a rugged, proven, goal oriented and tested (like our tested links to the side here) program you can use a majority of what we do on your planned recovery days.  Over the 270 posts we have written: 97.4% of the our Workouts push you to the limit.  These are no cheering squad “Box” workouts where the entire class performs band assisted pull ups and lives vicariously through your impressive lifts.  We need to look deep whiten ourselves and find the motivation to succeed.  Uncle Mo is still feeling the side effects from competing in the X-Fit games back in 2008 with three cracked ribs (yeah we were competing in the X-Fit games before you knew it was cool…Gosh you really do take yourself that seriously?!?).  Pin these thoughts in the back of your mind as we gather steam for the next few weeks.
